A Nigerian group is calling for King Goodwill Zwelithini to face the International Crimes Court over his utterances about foreign nationals recently.
Zwelithini must account for his comments regarding foreign nationals, this is according to a Nigerian human rights group .
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project group has laid an official complaint with the ICC to make Zwelithini, King of the Zulus take responsibility for the xenophobic violence which was possibly ignited as a result of his remarks. In an address at Pongola, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Zwelithini can be clearly heard speaking out about African immigrants owning businesses in the city.
According to News24.com, the group has requested an ICC prosecutor to investigate not only Zwelithini but the local police and their handling of xenophobia.
"This hate speech generated fear and hatred that created the conditions for violence and discrimination against Nigerians and other African citizens. Once the climate of violence has been created, direct and public incitement to crimes builds on it, exacerbating the situation by further heating up passions and directing South Africans’ hatred towards non-nationals such as Nigerians," Serap said.
Zwelithini has since slammed the media for taking his comments out of context and gone on to call for peace and stability.
