Oscar Nominations: "The Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" Lead!

The 87th Academy Award nominations were announced this morning at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. Leading the Oscars charge was “Birdman,” which scored nine nominations including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, best acting for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone. This is Keaton’s first Academy Award nomination. Tied for nine nominations was Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” including Best Picture and Original Screenplay, but no nominations for acting.

Critical darling “Boyhood” earned six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Directing. This is writer-director Richard Linklater‘s first Best Picture nomination. Also faring well was “The Imitation Game,” which came away with eight nominations.

The big surprise of the morning was Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper.” The movie that tells the story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle earned six nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Actor nomination for Bradley Cooper.

The Academy Awards will take place on February 22 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, starting at 7 p.m. EST, with Neil Patrick Harris as host.
